Me: Good morning officer. (With a warm smile & happenning+confidence tone)
She actually noticed me after that smile & smiled back.
VO: Good morning. Pass me your passport and i20.
Me: Here you go officer.
VO: (Looking at my i20 with a confused tone) you have a large amount of deficit! How are you going to manage the expense?
Me: My mother is going to bear that expense.
VO: (Looking at the computer screen) What is her source of income?
Me: Well, my parents always had big dreams about my higher studies. So they saved an amount of ** thousand USD approximately for this. Other than that, as for regular income, my mother gets rent from ** apartments in Dhaka city & * apartments in noakhali. She also gets the govt. pension of my father & interest from 2 FDRs. Along with that, she gets agricultural -”
VO: (interrupting me) Did your father die?
Me: Yes. Unfortunately.
VO: What did he do?
Me: He was a first class Govt. Officer. He worked for the Forest Department.
VO: okay…. (Typing. Pindrop silence for 10 seconds, then with a curious tone) Oh, you’ve changed your field from Microbiology to business background! Why so?
Me: Well, there’s an interesting story behind this. I was always a very outspoken person & creative to the core. I loved creative writing & generating new ideas for any campaigns. So when I was studying at BRAC UNIVERSITY(told that intentionally, because I heard that they adores BRACU, which is actually true lol.), at 3rd year, I took part in a marketing challange. I did so good that the organizing digital marketing agency recruited me right away as a part timer. & when I was done with my graduation, they requested me to join there immediately as a full time copywriter. I never had to look back on microbiology after that, because i found my rythm in digital marketing, you know! (With a persuasive smile)
VO(with a warm smile): Oh I see. (Again looked back on the computer screen) How long ago you both got married?
Me: We are married for 8 years.
VO: oh! (Astonished, then Asked my husband) & what do you do?
Husband: I am the Chief Operating officer at “X”.
VO: So, are you going to leave your job?
He: No, not really. I am going to take a paid vacation for 3 months.
VO: (silently looking at the screen for 5 seconds) I am approving your visa. Collect your passport in…(আর কিছু ঢুকতেসিল না মাথায়!

আমি না একটা প্রফেসর ধরতে পারছি, আর না পারছি একটা স্কলারশিপ ম্যানেজ করতে। নিজে বুঝে শুনে আগাইলে হয়ত পারতাম, কারন হেল্প করার জন্য কাজিনরা ছিল। কিন্তু একটা এজেন্সি আমাকে শুরুর দিকে হেল্প(!) করে আমার ১২ টা বাজাইসে। আমার ৫২ টা এক্সট্রা কারিকুলার এর সার্টিফিকেট ছিল। কিন্তু এডই করতে দেয় নাই সিভি তে। বলসে, ইউনিভার্সিটি নাকি মানা করেছে এড করতে!!! যেখানে পরে জেনেছি যে এমেরিক্যান ইউনিভার্সিটি গুলো এই ব্যাপারটা বেশ এপ্রিশিয়েট করে আর স্কলারপশিপ দেয়। তাছাড়া আমার HSC এর স্কোরও ইচ্ছা করে GPA 5 এর জায়গায় 4.75 দেখিয়েছে, যেন স্কলারশিপ কোনভাবেই হাতে না আসে। নেহায়াত আমার ইন্টারভিউটা অনেক ভালো হয়েছিল Shenandoah business School এর Dean এর সাথে, তাই উতরে গিয়েছি আলহামদুলিল্লাহ। কিন্তু আপনাদের জন্য উপদেশ থাকল, ভুলেও এজেন্সি ধরে আগাবেন না। নিজে বুঝে শুনে করুন, তাহলে লুপহোল গুলো নিজেই বুঝে প্রিপেয়ারড হতে পারবেন DS 160 ফিলাপের সময় ও ইন্টারভিউ এর সময়।
(এজেন্সির অফিসার আমার থেকে উল্টাপাল্টা চার্জ কাটার সময় আমি ডিরেক্ট মেইল করে দেই ভার্সিটি কে জানতে চেয়ে যে এই চার্জটা কিসের। পরে ভার্সিটির প্যাদানি খেয়ে টাকা ফেরত দেয় আর চাকরি ও চলে যায় সেই অফিসারের।কিন্তু আমি সরে আসি ওদের কাছ থেকে এবং ডিরেক্ট যোগাযোগ করতে থাকি ভার্সিটির সাথে এরপর থেকে।)
Tips: Try to prepare the sponsorship documents & memorize it clearly. Never give them any vague numbers or digits. They do not like that. আমার সামনের বেশ কয়েকজন ভালো ভালো ব্যাকগ্রাউন্ডের মানুষ ছিল। কারো বাবার গার্মেন্টস আছে, তো কারো প্লাস্টিক ম্যানুফ্যাকচারিং কোম্পানি আছে। কিন্তু মনে হলো, ইমপ্লয়ির নাম্বার টা এক্স্যাক্টলি বলতে দেরি করায় ভিসা দেয় নি ওদের।
Also, try to keep a smiling face. Be confident. এম একটা attetude রাখতে হবে, যে you actually belong here.
Also last but not the least, dress well. Not too casual & not too fancy. Keep it Elegant & simple. First impression is the best impression.
